Sparta, pop. 9,500, is a city in western Wisconsin that was founded back in 1852 and it was named after the ancient Greek city. It’s the county seat of Monroe County.

Sparta draws a lot of visitors. In early days people flocked to the town for the healing powers of its mineral springs. More recently, tourists have been arriving on two wheels. The city is the trailhead for the Elroy-Sparta Trail, a 32-mile bike trail that’s considered the first converted rail trail. The city calls itself the “Biking Capital of Wisconsin.”

But there’s much more to Sparta than great water and bike trails. For more than a century, it has been home to a remarkable public library.

The Sparta Free Library’s roots date to 1874, when the city became the first in Wisconsin to establish a free library. In the early years, the city library operated out of the back room of dental offices and in spare rooms above department stores.

Things changed in a big way in 1902 when the city received a $12,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. The funds paid for a beautiful new library.

The decades took a toll on the building and in the 1980s it was renovated, expanded, and made more accessible, all while preserving the library’s classic character. It’s a now a beautiful city landmark, complete with a tranquil fountain out front, and it’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
