No need to visit Hogwarts or Winterfell to see a castle: just head to the Nutmeg State! Many have visited the famed Gillette Castle in Connecticut. Located in East Haddam, this magnificent structure is within a state park and it’s a popular spot for picnics and marriage proposals. But we have plenty of other castles and castle-like structures in Connecticut. For example, check out the Saville Dam. The masonry work was built with a purpose: the turret hides the Barkhamsted Reservoir’s pump and other inner workings. Still, the unique design is one of the prettiest dams we’ve ever seen.
The Barkhamsted Reservoir is the largest drinking water reservoir in Connecticut. At about eight miles long, it supplies drinking water for much of the Hartford region. The dam itself is a half-mile long and 135 feet high.

Much of the castle-like tower is actually underwater. The tower is 181 feet tall, with the base 115 feet below the surface.

This is such a unique and beautiful structure that is fitting for the spectacular dam. The dam was difficult to build due to its location right in between two river valleys.

The nearby hills provide a beautiful backdrop. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most-photographed places in Connecticut!

The dam was completed in 1940 and has been a popular site for Connecticut residents and visitors ever since.

This is such a great place for a picnic or a day out near the water. It may not strictly be a true castle in Connecticut, but it looks enough like one to make your day a little more magical.
