We’ve got no shortage of hotels in the Empire State. Bed and breakfasts, historic inns from the colonial and Revolutionary War eras: we’ve got it all. Those looking for historic hotels in New York will find no difficulty finding a spot to stay. One place that’s not only among the most famous but also the most historic hotels in New York is the Algonquin Hotel in New York City. It’s had a long and varied past over the last century and remains one of the Big Apple’s most popular hotels.

The Algonquin Hotel is located right in midtown Manhattan and is a designated New York City landmark.

Perhaps the hotel’s most famous resident is the live-in cat, which has run of the hotel. A cat has been present in the building since the early 1930s, when the hotel’s first owner-manager took in a stray.

The hotel restaurant famously gives a lunch discount to struggling writers.

For over a decade, the Algonquin Round Table met in the hotel restaurant. The group was made up of New York City writers and actors and they met almost daily at the hotel from 1919 to 1929.

With how famous the bar and restaurant are, it’s easy to forget the main purpose of the building is the hotel! If you want an upscale, not to mention historic, experience in the Big Apple, this is the hotel for you!
