Kentucky truly shines during the holiday season, with its small towns, big cities, and beloved attractions all lit up big and bright. There’s an undeniable magic in the air, with twinkling lights and gorgeous displays built proudly for the season. And while there are numerous options for enjoying Christmas lights in Kentucky, there’s one smaller event that’s a long-standing tradition here in the Bluegrass State — and it’s one you need to move to the top of your list.

One of the most beloved holiday traditions in the Bluegrass State is the Kirsch Lights & Live Nativity.

Each year, the Kirsch family of Butler, Kentucky, hosts a dazzling light display and live nativity, as a way to gently remind folks about the true reason for the season.

The event features a half-mile display of lights between four houses and (because, Kentucky) six barns, with hundreds of glowing figures lighting the way. The weekend before Christmas, there’s a live nativity with real animals and people portraying the nativity scene from the Biblical Christmas story.

But that’s not why the family organizes this massive event, year after year. They do it as a way to gently remind folks what Christmas is all about: family, friends, and the spirit of love, giving, and gratitude.
