In southern Wisconsin, a little-known trail rewards adventurous hikers with some incredible views. The Pine Cliff Trail in Governor Dodge State park involves some climbing but it offers some incredible vistas of the forest, a pristine lake, and rocky cliffs. The trail is located in Governor Dodge State park, a park in Iowa County that’s just outside the city of Dodgeville. It’s named after Henry Dodge, the first governor of the Wisconsin territory.

The park covers more than 5,000 acres and consists of oak and hickory forest. It has two scenic lakes (Cox Hollow Lake and Twin Valley Lake), sandstone cliffs, and a pretty waterfall called Stephen’s Falls.

There’s a lot to do in the park, including fishing, camping, boating and mountain biking. But if you do nothing else, hike the Pine Cliff Trail.

The trail is a looped path and it covers 2.2 miles. It’s a bit of a workout – it has 410 feet of elevation gain.
