They may not attract the same number of visitors as our better-known locales, but there’s plenty of fun to be had. Exploring the latest trending trails is great, but there’s something to be said for lesser-known spots that don’t get as much attention. One of our favorite secluded state parks in Connecticut is Above All State Park in Warren. It’s tiny, undeveloped, filled with history, and ripe for exploration.
At about 31 acres, Above All State Park is one of the smallest of Connecticut’s 139 state parks and forests. The park’s name comes from its high, isolated location.

It’s an undeveloped area, so you won’t find pavilions and amenities like you might see at other state parks in Connecticut. However, that just means it’s ripe for exploration!

The area has a fascinating history. Since it’s pretty high up (at 1,470 feet above sea level), it was home to a lookout tower prior to the Civil War.

In the 1960s, the park became a Semi-Automatic Ground Environment Air Defense Network radar site. The sites were used to collect radar images of airspace all over the United States to monitor for possible Soviet air attack during the Cold War.

You can still see the concrete building that was used to house the radar equipment today.

This may not be one of the most popular state parks in Connecticut, but it sure has an interesting history!
