That’s right, there is indeed a waterfall hike in Louisiana, and it’s one that should go on everyone’s bucket list. Formally known as the Sicily Island Hills Wildlife Management Area, the J.C. “Sonny” Gilbert Wildlife Management Area is a 7,524-acre natural oasis that’s ideal for the nature lover in search of some solitude and scenery. The area contains not one but two waterfalls, and this hike will lead you straight to St. Mary’s Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Louisiana. Lace up those hiking boots and let’s check it out.
There are three nature trails within the wildlife management area.

Each trail ranges in difficulty, but even the most strenuous trail is fairly easy (it is in Louisiana, after all).
Hunter Trahan/All Trails
The St. Mary Falls Trail is located on the north side of the WMA.
Green Wolf/All Trails
The trail is about 1.5 miles long and good for all skill levels.

Just keep in mind that these primitive trails tend to get muddy if it’s been raining, so be sure to check the weather before you head out.
Justin P./All Trails
It’s a catch 22, because you’ll want to visit the falls after a recent rain so you can see the falls in all their glory.
KC Temple/All Trails
The 10-foot waterfall along the Sandy Bayou is certainly not something you see every day in the Pelican State.
Joshua Poe/All Trails
You can walk to the top of the waterfall so you can get a better view, too.
Angie Robbins/All Trails And if you happen to visit during a dry spell and are willing to get a little wet, you can walk behind the waterfall for an epic view.
While you’re in the area, be sure to check out Rock Falls, the tallest waterfall in Louisiana! The 17-foot waterfall is impressive and the trail is easy enough for just about anyone to tackle.
