Colorado is home to more geographically significant places than we can count, including the Continental Divide. Beginning at the Cape Prince of Wales in Alaska and ending in the Andes of South America, the Continental Divide is a naturally occurring boundary that separates the continent’s river systems, with North America’s separating the water from the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic, Arctic, and the Gulf of Mexico. Since the Continental Divide is so geographically significant, many people try to travel it by foot or car, making Colorado’s portion a popular spot. If you, too, wish to experience some (or all) of the Divide for yourself, start by visiting this historic and charming small town that houses the highest point along the ridge:

Incorporated in 1880, Silver Plume is a former silver mining camp that is now part of the federally designated Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District, which houses nearly 200 residents and the Continental Divide’s highest point: Grays Peak.

Billed as the highest point of the Continental Divide and the highest point of both Clear Creek and Summit counties, Grays Peak sits at 14,278 feet, making it the 10th highest summit in the Rocky Mountains.

If you feel like you can conquer Grays, you will not only be treated to the fact that you visited the highest point along the Continental Divide but to some of the most stunning views in the state.

In addition to being close to Grays Peak, Silver Plume also houses many of its original buildings and homes along the main street.
