There are many beautiful cities and small towns in New Mexico that tend to top the list of the perfect day trip or overnight stay locations. However, there is one small town that should be at the top of every must-visit list — Cloudcroft. Cloudcroft’s story begins with the railroad.
Cloudcroft New Mexico/Facebook After the railroad was completed between Alamogordo, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, the railroad’s owners sent a survey party to explore the area east of Alamogordo. They found the beautiful wilderness that is present-day Cloudcroft. They named the area Cloudcroft as the word is an English description meaning “a clearing covered in clouds.”
While the railroad no longer comes into this small village, as you drive down the streets, you’ll see the impact of the railroad throughout the architecture and design of the town.
