New Jersey is a place with strong ties to the ocean. Historically, it’s been an important part of the state’s development, and of course, the gorgeous beaches have firmly put New Jersey on the map as a desirable place to be. Naturally, there are a ton of lighthouses here then — so why not try a gorgeous walk to an iconic New Jersey lighthouse?
There’s just something about seeing a lighthouse that’s so awe-inspiring, and Barnegat Lighthouse is no different.
Andrea Grigg/AllTrails Located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island, it’s one of the prettiest lighthouses in the state!
To get a good look at the lighthouse and experience a lovely, casual hike, we recommend trying out the Barnegat Lighthouse Trail.
Todd A Williams/AllTrails The trail takes you to some of the nicest parts of Barnegat Lighthouse State Park.
This hike is really more of a walk. With an elevation gain of 32 feet, it’s accessible for people of all ages.
Kate RN/AllTrails It’s just under two miles in length, so you’ll get to stretch your legs!
Some parts of it are very wooded. You feel like you’re deep into a fairytale forest.
David Imhof/AllTrails The beach feels miles away when you’re in the thick of the small woods.
But don’t worry — a large portion of the trail takes place on the beach.
Ashley Claypoole/AllTrails You can admire the ocean, take a break on the sand, and if it’s warm enough, get your feet wet!
Eventually, the highlight of Barnegat Lighthouse Trail emerges: the lighthouse!
Kym Baldwin Ney/AllTrails Known colloquially as “Old Barney,” it stands 169 feet tall and has been around since the 19th century!
Our favorite time of day to visit this trail is before sunset.
Zack Hillis/AllTrails That way you get to experience a gorgeous color show right on the ocean as the sun starts to dip.
Bring your dogs along with you if you’d like – just make sure they’re leashed!
