This adorable little mountain town makes a perfect detour on your way to the Kentucky Mountains, and is sure to become one of your new favorite places in the state.
Monticello is a sweet little town located in the southern region of Kentucky. It’s known as the “Houseboat Capital of the World,” as the town boasts several houseboat manufacturers.

But there’s so much more to Monticello than boats; this small locale of just over 6,000 residents packs quite a historic punch!

Monticello is home to numerous historic buildings; the West-Metcalfe House is another notable site. It was the first brick house in this region of Kentucky, and it also served as Confederate headquarters and a battlefield hospital during the Battle of Mill Springs.
