There is no shortage of the number of awesome parks right here in the Land of Lincoln, but the one we’ve got for you today might just be your new favorite. How does observing a wondrous geological artifact while hanging out in a fairytale forest sound? Come along with us today as we explore the wonders of the Shawnee National Forest – a beautiful park in Illinois that is perfect for your next outing.
The number one thing we’re going to recommend that you do is to hop on the .3-mile trail to the Pomona Natural Bridge.

The bridge spans some 90 feet, making the overlook where you catch a glimpse well worth the moderate hike to get there.

The natural arch may look man-made, but it’s actually the result of millions of years of erosion.

The Garden of the Gods is an astounding place to look around, and that trail is only a quarter of a mile.

As for what else we’d have you do in this pretty park, we highly recommend spending some time with the trees.

After all, what is more enchanting to explore than the woods?

Of the spaces we mentioned in this article, the Pomona Natural Bridge is the most impressive. There are plenty of places in the not-so-small forest area that have light or moderate traffic, but there’s just something so special about hanging around with a feature that old and wonderful. You’ll love the Garden of the Gods, but to really enjoy the fullness of Shawnee, you’ll want to visit the natural breeze.
