With summer on its way, we can’t help but dream of all the adventures we’d like to accomplish in the near future. At the top of your list should be a visit to this stunning mountain lake in Lamoille Canyon. First of all, there’s something almost magical about spending the day at a remote mountain lake, away from civilization and surrounded by natural beauty. The next time you feel like you just need to get away and spend some time with a beautiful Nevada landscape, consider a trek to this dreamy destination.
Hiding in the Ruby Mountains, Lamoille Lake is an unspoiled beauty that’s just waiting to be discovered. Seeing it is a must for any adventurer looking to escape into the mountains for a few hours.

The lake is accessible by a 3.7-mile out-and-back trail which provides the perfect introduction to the natural wonder that is the Ruby Mountains. The hike, although relatively short, provides fantastic views from beginning to end.

The trailhead can be found within Lamoille Canyon, about a half hour drive from Elko. To get there, take Highway 227 southeast from Elko. Follow the signs into the canyon and drive until you reach the end of the road. This is where you’ll find a parking lot and the trailhead.

There are technically two trails that both lead to Lamoille Lake. One is for hikers and the other for equestrians. The hiker trail is considered the most scenic of the two and leads you through groves of pine trees and across Lamoille Creek.

The trail continues up the side of the canyon, and you’ll soon find yourself approaching Dollar Lakes. Although beautiful, these lakes are smaller than Lamoille Lake so they tend to be less populated. However, they are a great spot to stop a rest for a few.

Continuing on, it’s just a short distance before you reach the stunning Lamoille Lake. Boasting gorgeous water and surrounded by mountains, the lake feels like your own personal little oasis.

The lake is known to be well-stocked with brook trout and it’s become a popular spot for anglers. On a hot summer day, a quick dip in the water is the perfect way to cool off. Be warned, though—it’s chilly!

This relatively short hike can easily be accomplished in just a few hours. With only a few steep sections, it’s the perfect adventure for both beginning and seasoned hikers. Make a visit to Lamoille Lake a priority this summer. It’s a sight you don’t want to miss.
