Spelunking is such an interesting hobby, but it’s something that most people are not able to get into. It requires specialized equipment and extensive training. If you’re interested in exploring caves in New York, but don’t have the ability or desire to get into caving as a hobby, check out Howe Caverns! This Schoharie County cavern allows you to experience all the joys of exploring caves without having to go through the trouble of spelunking.

Howe Caverns was discovered in 1842 by a farmer, Lester Howe.

Justin Brock/Google Maps He noticed that his cows frequently gathered at the bottom of a hill on hot days, and when he approached the area, he felt a cool breeze. As he dug at the spot, he found a cave, which was then named for him. He opened up a tourist attraction on the site, which was eventually shut down due to financial difficulties. The property was a limestone quarry for a time, but reopened to the public in 1929.

The caverns are now outfitted with an elevator, lighting, and handrails, making them much more accessible. The temperature is a constant 52 °F, regardless of the weather outside, so make sure to bring a sweater!

The brick pathways mean there’s less chance of slipping, so the caverns are fairly easy to navigate. Still, watch your step!
