Not all of Arizona’s waterfalls require strenuous hikes or paddling trips to behold. Grand Falls, located in Leupp on the Navajo Nation, is just a brief walk from the parking area. It’s definitely a bucket-list-worthy adventure, and it’s one of the best waterfall hikes in Arizona if you ask us. Check this beauty out:
A hidden gem on Navajo Nation land, Grand Falls is located at the end of a remote, eight-mile dirt road in Leupp. It’s recommended to take a 4x4 vehicle, but regular cars have reported success with extremely slow driving.

After parking in the north side lot, you’ll enjoy a scenic overlook of the entire falls. They may or may not be flowing depending on recent rainfall, but the views are incredible either way.

Truly in the middle of nowhere, this muddy yet barren canyon landscape seemingly extends into oblivion. As you walk towards the falls, you’ll push back against ridiculously strong winds and encounter several large, moon-like craters—an otherworldly experience if we’ve ever had one!

Many visitors hike over to the south side, where an unmarked trail leads down towards the water. The climb is quite steep and rocky, so we recommend just admiring the natural wonder from above.

Grand Falls has been given the nickname “Chocolate Falls” because of the milky-brown hue it takes on during the annual springtime snowmelt. It’s the chocolate river at Willy Wonka’s factory come-to-life!

Arizona may be home to lots of desert and desert flora/fauna, like cacti and cliffs and all sorts of wonderful things, but it’s also home to plenty of amazing waterfalls, most of which are accessible to the public, even if it takes a bit of a hike. Some of our favorite hiking trails with waterfalls in Arizona (some of which are seasonal falls and/or rain-dependent) include the amazing Hieroglyphic Trail in the Superstition Wilderness. This amazing trail is moderately difficult and is 2.8 miles long; it’s got amazing wildflowers on top of the seasonal waterfall that’s best viewed following a good rain. There’s also the Bear Canyon to Seven Falls Trail, which you’ll find nestled in the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area and is rated as moderated. That one’s longer, at 8.3 miles, and it’s also great for birdwatching. You’ll also love Water Wheel Falls, within the Tonto National Forest, and Fossil Creek Falls is unreal in its beauty.
