Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or you’re a recent transplant, it doesn’t take long of living in New York State to become well-aware of the many signs of spring. For some, you’ll quickly begin to notice how much more green everything’s beginning to get or the fact that flowers are starting to bloom all across the state. One sign of spring’s arrival that’s always been tried and true though, is the simple sound of spring peepers emerging in our state’s secluded woods. So, when do spring peepers come out in New York? One sound of spring that many New Yorkers happen to be familiar with is that of the Pseudacris crucifer AKA spring peepers - a tiny little frog that’s generally only about one inch in size! Hearing them is one of the best things about spring in New York.

Seen in secluded areas and damp forests throughout the eastern United States and Canada, spring peepers are considered to be one of the most common vertebrates here in New York State; although you’ve most likely only heard them, not actually seen them.

Earning their name from the large brown x-mark on their backs, spring peepers mate and lay their eggs in secluded ponds around the state of New York and are known to hang out among the forest’s shrubbery and undergrowth. Whether you see them or just hear them, it’s one of the best signs of spring in New York.

Throughout the month of April and well into spring, you’ll hear the songs of the spring peepers that have been likened to every sort of sound from young chickens to sleigh bells and will begin to see fellow New Yorkers posting pictures of their eggs and videos of their songs on Facebook, like in our New York Nature Lovers group! .

This 2.5-acre garden is filled with gorgeous plants and flowers galore. Located at Cornell University is the 25-acre Cornell Botanic Gardens. Open to the public (no, you don’t have to be a student to visit), you will love the immaculate garden areas throughout. What is spring like in New York? After a cold, dreary winter, the weather warms up a bit, colorful flowers begin to bloom, and you can expect spring rains. The temperatures can be on the cooler side to relatively warm. You may need to dress in layers and carry a jacket and umbrella with you everywhere during the season.
