Life seems to be at a bit of a standstill during the winter months. Many of us start itching for the warmth and getting outside again. When spring arrives, there are a few things you can count on, and a seasonal serenade – compliments of thousands of spring peepers – is one of them. Spring peepers aren’t the only amorous amphibians that can be heard in the Magnolia State, though. There are at least 28 different kinds of frogs in Mississippi – most of which are active during the spring and summer months.

Because of Mississippi’s warmer weather, several species, including spring peepers, can sometimes be heard as early as winter. Leopard frogs, chorus frogs, crawfish frogs, and cricket frogs are a few others that have been known to start their annual crooning in winter. But we all know that hearing these sounds after winter is one of the best things about spring in Mississippi!
